EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Positive sewage detection at Byron Bay
Published: 29 Aug 2021

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) is urging people in the Byron region with even the mildest of symptoms to get tested for COVID-19, after fragments of the virus were detected in samples collected from the Byron Bay sewage treatment plant.

The detection was made on 26 August at the Byron Bay sewage treatment plant, which serves about 9,000 people.

There have been no other detections in samples taken at the other 22 treatment plants in NNSWLHD.

The last positive sewage detection at the Byron Bay plant was on 17 August 2021.

Acting NNSWLHD Chief Executive, Ms Lynne Weir, said there are no new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported among residents of the District, but the fact virus fragments were detected in the local sewage indicated the virus could be circulating in the area.

“It is vital the community remains vigilant and if you have even mild symptoms, please get tested,” Ms Weir said.

Testing clinics available in the Byron Bay region are:

  • Byron Central Hospital, 54 Ewingsdale Road, Ewingsdale.  Open Monday – Sunday 9am – 5pm
  • Byron Bay Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, 1 Byron Street, 2481, Byron Bay. Open Monday – Friday

A drive-through testing clinic will be available at the Cavanbah Centre Sports Ground, Ewingsdale Road, Byron Bay from 8.30am – 3.30pm on Monday 30 August.

There are more than 460 COVID-19 testing locations across NSW, many of which are open seven days a week.

To find your nearest clinic visit: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others/clinics or contact your GP.

Usual sewage treatment processes inactivate, or kill, the COVID-19 virus.

NNSWLHD is also urging people to check the Commonwealth Government’s Vaccine Eligibility Checker for vaccination and, if eligible, to book an appointment for a vaccination as soon as possible.
