EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Kindness Week in November saw us showcase the power of kindness in every corner of our District, bringing out the best in ourselves and uplifting patients and families.

From creative dress-ups to sharing food and smiles, we embraced the week’s "Kindness is my superpower" theme in many wonderful ways.

Some of us dressed as superheroes while others handed out handwritten notes of gratitude. Even the simplest acts—a smile or a thank you—left a lasting impact.

At Byron Central Hospital, distributing gifts and "kindness works here" cards sparked smiles and moments of connection, reinforcing that kindness is at the heart of everything the hospital does.

Casino and District Memorial Hospital took an interactive approach, hosting a BBQ lunch with site and nursing admin teams. Community members lifted spirits with songs. The hospital’s "bee kind" theme, complete with bee decorations, encouraged everyone to get involved. Also, the hospital’s operational services team treated cleaners, ward staff and security to a morning tea.

Grafton Base Hospital went all out with "you are awesome" kindness cards and biodegradable pot plants for staff. A bake-off brought friendly competition, with staff donning "kindness aprons" to judge and enjoy delicious treats. The day was capped with superhero costumes and night shift staff were treated to a special dinner.

At Murwillumbah District Hospital, staff watched videos about kindness and its impact on care, sharing cupcakes, pizza and pancakes while wearing superhero t-shirts.

The staff and residents of the Urbenville Multi-Purpose Service made a special contribution by posting messages of kindness on a kindness tree, enjoying a shared brunch, offering gifts, donning superhero costumes and decorating their site with bright, inspiring messages. To promote kindness every day, they’ve chosen to keep their kindness tree up and add to it whenever they can.

These are just some of the many and varied acts of kindness proudly made by staff across our LHD.

Kindness in our District is part of an ongoing effort to foster a culture of kindness throughout NSW Health. Kindness and compassion are essential in healthcare, improving experiences for all.

Thank you to everyone across our District who made Kindness Week 2024 such a success. Your actions inspired others and strengthened our community of care.

Please keep spreading kindness: it’s contagious!
